The Displace filter (menu Effect/Distort/Displace) distorts
an image by moving some pixels that are determined by color values (direction
and distance) of a separate image that is called displacement map.
This filter reads the color value of every pixel in the original image and
of the pixels in the diplacement map.
Then, the filter shifts the original image pixels on the basis of the values
of the corresponding pixels in the diplacement map and it is possible to
see this moving as shapes, colors and deformation patterns in the original
image.
The program reads the brightness values of the pixels in the displacement
map: these values tell to program wich pixels to move and how far to move
them.
It is important to remember that brightness values apply to a grayscale
and color images and that the three determining brightness values are: black,
white and middle gray. |

| In the Displace filter dialog box window, there are some presets
of displacement maps, (click on the arrow to open the drop-down list), but
almost any image and masks, saved as pcx or cpt or psd, can be a displacement
map: sometimes it is very important the sizes (and also the definition dpi)
are just the same to obtain the expected distortion. (see
tutorial n 20) |

The
displacement map distortions can be applied also to masks, when "Paint
on mask" (POM) mode is on.
At left, it is shown the button to activate this function . |
